GRADE LEVEL: | JHS 1st-3rd year |
SKILLS: | Speaking, Listening, Reading, you decide |
TIME: | ~50 minute lesson |
MATERIALS: | Teachers Faces magnetized, prepared games |
OBJECTIVES: | To review English learning points whilst facilitating competition |
INTRODUCTION: | This is basically games within a game. It can be used to review learning points, grammar points and sentence structures. Anything goes! |
PROCEDURE:
1. Lunch Groups!!! Get them into groups!!!
2. Give each group a teacher from your/their school. I got pictures of them then stuck a magnet on the back.
3. Now set up the board with a start area and a finish line. The number of places in between depends on how long you want the game to last. It’s similar to any simple board game set-up.
4. Now begin with Round 1. What kind of question depends on you and your JTE; grammar, sentence order, months, numbers, colours, ¬your call. Although push-up challenges are not effective English learning games, you can modify it by counting each push-up within a set time period!! Two birds (English and PE), one stone!!!
5. When Round 1 has finished, see what the places are. Then let the teachers be moved. I use this scale: 1st ¨C 3 moves, 2nd ¨C 2 moves, 3rd ¨C 1 move and 4th, 5th & 6th ¨C nothing. This keeps it close in my classes. Other variations involve dice. So 1st place gets to throw the die, and add on 6 moves for coming 1st. 2nd has a throw and 5 extra moves, and so on.
NOTES:
1. My favourite games to use are grammar based, but have students gambling on which is the right sentence and which is wrong. Then get them to correct the wrong sentence. Another favourite is music based. Just getting the groups to fill in gaps in the song sheets, or choosing the right word from two choices.
2. The pictures are easy to obtain. Every school should have their own digital camera with photo printing facilities. Make sure you get them pulling funny faces. Also students tend to choose teachers with their grade.
