Questions, questions… (Practicing question words)

GRADE LEVEL:	JHS 1 (p87 NH1)
SKILLS:	Reading/Writing (Thinking)
TIME:	30 minutes
MATERIALS:	Question parts, Worksheets
OBJECTIVES:	To practice the question words on p87
	To encourage the first years to start thinking when using English

PROCEDURE:

1. I wrote seven questions using the words from the book and then cut each one in two so there were 14 pieces of paper.

My questions:

• How /are you?

• Where/ is your favourite teacher?

• Who /is Roz?

• How old /is your textbook?

• How tall /is the school?

• What /foods do you like?

• When /do you get up?

(Note that several different combinations are possible with these questions which most students noticed and enjoyed experimenting with)

2. Give out the envelopes containing the question parts. Students should work in Science groups (4 students per group), as in Lunch groups a couple of students are always idle. Explain in English how to do the activity (usually I explain a couple of times until the majority understand and then one student explains in Japanese for those who really can’t get it).

3. Give the students about 5-10 minutes to piece the questions together and make them compete for points or stickers to be one of the first few groups to finish. Wander around making helpful suggestions.

4. Hand out the worksheet (see next page) and explain in English how to fill it in. Continue to wander around being helpful until the end of the lesson.

NOTES:

My JTE wanted to practice these questions which in itself seemed really dull to me but as a result of the competitive and creative elements the students ended up loving it and the class worked really well (my favourite answers, “Kocho-sensei is 1m tall”).

I actually filled in the first question and answer on the sheet to aid comprehension before making copies of it.

Make sure all students in a group are working together and no one is left out/too much in control or sleeping. As they all had to fill in individual worksheets they all ended up doing some work.

I followed this activity a few weeks later (last lesson of term) with one where students had to complete sentences within their group and were awarded points mainly for creativity. In the end the students went crazy and wrote things like, “We had a great vacation but Takuya was destroyed”. I think this clearly shows the benefits of making them think.
