Tim Burton’s: The Nightmare Before Christmas

Charlotte Shenker

GRADE LEVEL: JHS 3
SKILLS: Reading, listening, observation
TIME: Up to two 50 minute lessons
MATERIALS: Worksheet, a copy of Tim Burton’s “The Nightmare before Christmas”
OBJECTIVE: To teach students about Halloween and Christmas
To revise Grade 2 grammar points

PROCEDURE:

1. Most of your students will be familiar with this film (if they haven’t seen it already). Hand out the worksheets and ask students to take a few minutes to scan over the questions.

2. Check the overall understanding by reading through the questions and calling upon students to orally translate them.

3. Then explain that students need to watch the movie carefully and fill in the blanks with the words provided on the left hand side of the worksheet. However, for questions 5, 8, 10 and 12, they will need to write down their own answers. After that, let the show begin!

NOTES:

We only had 1 period to spend on this lesson this year, so we just watched as much as it took to answer the 12 questions (about the first half of the movie). I do highly recommend that you take the time to watch it all though – all the students I have shown it to have absolutely loved it!

The sequences in the opening scene are quite fast so it might be helpful to give your students a heads-up on upcoming questions, etc.
