Movie Self-Introduction

Aiko Harman

GRADE LEVEL: SHS 1
SKILLS: Speaking, Listening, Reading, Writing
TIME: 55 minutes
MATERIALS: many many worksheets, and some flashcards, DVD of The Nutty Professor, and whatever materials you need for your intro-speech/warm-up

OBJECTIVES:

1. To practice listening, writing, reading, speaking

2. To learn about Aiko! Always excellent

PROCEDURE:

1. Warm Up: Minimal sense listening. Aiko’s Self Introduction, fill in blanks.

For this I read a blurb about myself, showed pictures, etc. Students filled in blanks from my speech. This took about 5mins. VERY fast. 5mins.

2. Flashcards: Checked the blanks from the warm-up using flashcards. Also, very fast. 5mins.

3. Minimal sense reading: Introduce Aiko. Students read aloud from the sheet. 2mins.

4. “Find your Pace” Reading. On the “Nutty Professor: Reading Marathon” worksheet, I read one time, the students fill in the blanks. (We check answers quickly by writing words on the board.) Students then do “find your pace” reading, wherein they walk around the room for one minute, reading aloud the lines from the sheet. It’s kind of chaotic and sometimes the students mill around with one another, but it gets them to open up more. 5mins.

5. Target English. Pick two sentences from that text, have the students memorize the sentences. Pick two students to say the sentences aloud, without looking. 2mins.

6. Let’s Watch. Watch first clip of the movie. (Chapter 15, I think.) 5mins.

7. Rapid Interactive Reading (1). See “Rapid Interactive Reading” worksheet. Students read the questions/prompts as quickly as possible, and answer them as quickly as possible. Teacher picks students to answer. …Mixed results. 7mins.

8. Let’s Watch. Show another clip of the movie. (I forget what scene I showed, something near the end… just before the credits.) 5mins.

9. Rapid Interactive Reading (2). See “Let’s Talk About the Movie” worksheet. Students read the questions and respond with their own opinions. Pick some to read their opinions. 5mins.

10. If there is time, Opinion Writing/Telling. JTE and I read a dialogue on our opinions of the film. We then do mostly Q&A with students until the end of the class asking them what they think. 10mins.

NOTES:

  • I did this with a smaller 3rd year class (and a JTE who liked watching movies). The students were pretty confident to speak in English (not well, but confident, mind). I have done this style class using Harry Potter, The First Daughter, and My Fair Lady, all to relatively similar (enjoyable) results.

  • I also ran the same style of class with a normal-sized 1st-year class, but I showed clips from Josie &the Pussycats. They were happy/successful with most of the activities, but this movie is NOT a good movie for English learners (too many word-jokes, way too fast-paced).

  • I found it’s hard for the kids to come up with personal opinions on the cusp. We bribed them with “Aiko-cash” and candy and whatnot, sometimes, to get them to answer more quickly. We also let them work in small groups or pairs to come up with ideas.
