OBJECTIVES:
1. To get students to practice giving directions
2. To get students to listen to directions
PREPARATION:
Write key vocabulary on the white board before students arrive. E.g. turn left, go straight, turn diagonally left, keep going.
Split the gym into 2 halves. Make huge square using skipping ropes on one half of the gym; scatter bean-bags and cones in the middle.
PROCEDURE:
Stage 1
1. Review vocabulary on white board and get the students to repeat after you.
2. Next get all students to stand up and to move to one corner of the gym. Read out some directions e.g. go straight; turn left. The students should respond by walking in the direction you have said.
3. After a while get students to close their eyes. And repeat the activity. They usually end up bumping into each other which they find hilariously funny.
Stage 2
1. Split the class into 2 groups and get them to sit on opposite sides of each other. The JTE stands in the middle. Do the same activity but have students (randomly) instruct the JTE. (the JTE should have his/her eyes closed)
2. Then ask for volunteers. Tell them they can do it in pairs if they want. Repeat the activity.
Stage 3
1. Get all students to face course 1.
2. Blindfold the JTE and go to the start of the course.
3. JTE and ALT demonstrate the activity.
Aim: By listening to the directions of your partner one has to get from the start to finish without touching the beans bags. If you touch anything you have to start again.
4. Split the class into 2 equal groups. The ALT is in charge of one team and the JTE the other.
5. The ALT takes their team to course 1 and gives out a blindfold to each pair.
6. The JTE has to ask his team to prepare course 2. This should only take a few minutes as there should be many students.
7. The gym should now be set up as two separate minefields.
8. JTE distributes blindfolds. Students then line up in pairs at the start of each course and begin.
If you have time at the end you could have a competition between the 2 teams. Students nominate someone from their team. The nominees stand at the start and are blindfolded. When the ALT says start, students on both teams (at random) direct their player to the finish. The first one to finish wins.
NOTES:
There is a lot of preparation involved in this activity, but it is worth it. It’s a lot of fun, but you need the support of your JTE for this lesson to go well.
This lesson should follow a class about directions.
