Do you have X?

Maria E. Torres

GRADE LEVEL: 1st, 2nd, 3rd
SKILLS: Listening, speaking
TIME: 5 minutes: Review target topic
10 minutes: Explain game and practice new “question and answer” phrases
15 minutes: Play game
MATERIALS: A4 size cards (target topic –animal, color, etc)
Small cards for each student (5 cards per student)
Envelopes for holding small cards (set of 40)
OBJECTIVES: To practice asking and answering a simple question
To review previously taught topics (animals, colors, etc)

PROCEDURE:

1. To make materials, copy the animal sheet and cut along dotted lines. Place 5 different animal cards into each envelope. If you want to review colors then just use colored construction paper. To make your cards re-usable // child proof, laminate them or put them into small plastic card cases.

2. Review target topic using large A4 size cards. Ask students “What’s this?” and then show them a card. In order to give students more thinking time and to have them all answer in chorus it’s good to count to 3 and then let students respond. This also helps avoid having only the fastest 2 or 3 students always yelling out “the answer”. The point of reviewing is not to make it a competition of who can answer first, but to give all students time to recall information previously studied and to actively participate by speaking in English. You can also ask students to answer in the following way ---“It’s a cat”, “It’s blue.”

3. To explain the game to students you will need the help of the homeroom teacher. Before class starts make sure to explain the game and the English phrases used in the game to the homeroom teacher. Make sure to give students plenty of time to practice the new phrases. How to play the game: Each student gets an envelope with 5 different animal cards in it. The contents should be kept secret. When two students meet they “quietly” janken in English by saying 1, 2, 3 or rock, paper, scissors. The winner gets to ask for an animal card of their choice, i.e. “Do you have a cat?” The other student looks into their envelope and if they have a cat card, they respond “Yes, I do.” The student then hands over the card. If they do not have a cat card then they say “No, I don’t.” Both students then find a new partner and janken.

NOTES:

Make sure students use English during the game. Tell students it’s wrong to lie and say they don’t have a requested card when in fact they do have it. If any student runs out of cards because they lose every janken then give them another envelope with a new set of 5 cards.
