CELEBRITY HEADS

 

GRADE LEVEL:	JHS grades 2-3
SKILLS:	Speaking, listening
TIME:	40 - 50 minutes
MATERIALS:	enough small squares of paper for there to be enough for two for each child

 

OBJECTIVES:

• Practice speaking
• Practice listening comprehension

 

PROCEDURE:

• Start by giving a small demonstration with the JTE. The Alt sits at the front of the class on a chair and the JTE writes a name of an animal or famous person above the ALT’s head. The Alt has to guess what or who the animal or person is that has been written on the blackboard using questions like:

 

• The Alt gets all the students to answer "yes" or "no" at the same time. Once the ALT guesses its time to move onto getting the children involved.
• Hand out to each child two squares of paper one they write their name on and one they write the name of an animal or famous person. The pieces of paper are then placed on two piles, the students’ names on one and the animal or famous person or character on the other.
• Three pieces are drawn from each pile. The three students chosen must come and sit at the front of the class and have a name written above their heads.
• Each student one at a time proceeds to ask questions about who they are. If a student gets a "no" answer then the next student can start to ask questions. The winner is the student who guesses what has been written above their heads first.

NOTES:

It took about 40 minutes for three sets of students to play the game. All the students still sitting down answered yes or no to the questions. Hints were given to make it easier for students if they were way off course.

My students wrote pretty much anything from "cat" to "Ultra man" to "Orange Range". Anything was ok just as long as they could ask questions about who they were.

 

It worked a well with the enthusiastic students and the ones who were always speaking in class.
