Vehicles

Jenny Truong

GRADE LEVEL: First year students
SKILLS: Listening, speaking, writing,reading
TIME: One 50 minute class period
MATERIAL: Pictures of vehicles, handout
OBJECTIVES: To learn about different types of vehicles and the phrase “What kind of..”
PREPARATION: Gather pictures of vehicles from internet or magazines. Make a handout with writing space, a role play, and a fill in the blanks grid (should be separate from handout)

PROCEDURE:

1) Warm Up: Show pictures of different types of vehicles and have students label/shout the name of the drawings. Explain vocabulary if needed. Depending on the level of English or the interest they have in vehicles, you can teach them additional words such as price, mileage, year, make, model etc. You should at least teach them price and year.

2) Handout Have pictures of cars. Write information for those cars ie. price, year, mileage, etc. Then have the students write down descriptions of these cars in full sentences. Ie “The price is………..” The descriptions should correspond to questions you will ask in the role play later on.

3) Explain the phrase “What kind of ….”

4) Role play Students practice a role play about purchasing a car. For example…

A: “What kind of vehicle are you looking for?”

B: “I am looking for a SUV”

A: “How about a Mitsubishi Pajero ?”

B: “What is the price of the Mitsubishi Pajero?

Etc…

You can make your own role play using phrases or words your students are familiar with or at least explain the meaning of the phrases. These same questions will be used later on for fill in the blank grid work. If you have outgoing students you can get some to perform in front of the class.

6) Fill in the blank Grid work Have a person A and person B grid. Have the students ask each other questions. Try to use questions you used in the role play. Person A and Person B have different blanks filled in and they must ask each other questions to complete the grid.
