Preposition Practice Treasure Hunt

Alice Muratani

GRADE LEVEL: SHS 1st-3rd years
SKILLS: Listening, speaking, reading
TIME: About 20 minutes
MATERIALS: Paper, pen, prizes
OBJECTIVES: To practice using prepositions in a practical and fun way

PROCEDURE:

  1. Write clues on pieces of paper using prepositions. For example, “Under a chair,” “Next to the trash can,” “Behind the clock,” “On a curtain,” etc. Make the pieces of paper small so that they are easy to hide and somewhat difficult to find.
  2. At some point during the day when students are not in the classroom, go and hide these clues in the appropriate locations.
  3. Pick a student to read the first clue to the class. Have all the students start searching for the next clue. Once they find the next clue, have another student read it aloud to the class. Each clue should be read by a different student. Try to have as many clues as possible so that a lot of the students have a chance to read one.
  4. The last clue should lead to a small prize for your students 

NOTES:

If it is possible, the treasure hunt would be fabulous outside. I did this with a small class and it worked great inside the language lab where we usually hold class. Please make the clues more difficult or less difficult depending on the level of your students. The length of the treasure hunt will obviously depend on how many clues there are and how difficult the clues are to understand and find.
