The Power of Music

Evan Pike

GRADE LEVEL: SHS 1
SKILLS: Listening, speaking, writing
TIME: One class
MATERIALS: Worksheets, ball (or something to throw), something to play music
OBJECTIVES: To review/practice emotions, verbs, and speaking

PROCEDURE:

(Optional) In the previous class, tell students that next class they should bring CDs or MDs to of their favorite music

  1. Before class make a CD or MD to use in class. It is best to choose different types of songs.
  2. Introduce the topic and talk about how music is very powerful because of how it can change how you feel or think.
  3. Hand out worksheets and go over vocabulary.
  4. Explain the worksheet.
  5. Play a song and ask students to complete a sentence about how it makes them feel or what it makes them want to do.
  6. After a minute or two stop the song, and throw the object (I used a small soft American football) and whoever catches it has to stand up and read their sentence.
  7. The student then throws the object to another student and then they have to read their sentence and so on. I did about 3 or 4 students per song.

NOTES:

My students are fairly low level but most of them enjoyed this activity and some even asked if we could do it again. Since my students were fairly low level I pretty much outlined how to make the sentences and gave examples. If your students are high level you can just give them more freedom and not spoon feed them. The students enjoy it because they can listen to music and make their friends suffer. Also it is funny because some students would rather get hit in the face or back of the head than catch the ball because they don’t want to read their sentence.
