Self-Intro
Scott Montgomery
GRADE LEVEL: | SHS 1 | SKILLS: | Listening plus a little speaking, reading, and writing | TIME: | One class | MATERIALS: | Worksheets (2) | OBJECTIVES: | For the students to learn about the ALT, for the students to become comfortable asking the ALT questions, for the ALT to learn a little about the students |
PROCEDURE:
- First begin by giving a short 5-10 min introduction of yourself and your country to your new 1st years. Try to make your English as easy and understandable as possible. The goal here is to make your students comfortable listening to English and to give them confidence in their English skills. Using pictures and other visual aids can be useful. Try to not give too much information about yourself as this will make it difficult for students to ask you questions later.
- Next give each student a small quiz about your introduction. Try to use simple T/F, multiple choice, and fill in the blank questions. Next repeat your self introduction.
- If you have time, you can now spend 5 minutes giving the correct answers to the quiz.
- Next, give a handout to each student and allow them to create their own self-introduction. This can be a mix of fill in the blanks, answering questions, and free writing.
- Have each student write down a few questions to ask you. If students seem to be having problems thinking of questions, give them a few hints like, “What is your favorite…”, “Have you ever…”, or “Do you like…”.
- Finally have each student in the class ask you one question. Make sure to tell them that each question must be unique. If you are willing to answer some of the stranger or more personal questions, this can end up being quite funny. If you are having problems, allow the students to ask in Japanese and then get the teacher to translate your more difficult answers.
