Richard Lim
| GRADE LEVEL: | SHS 1-3 (low level) |
| SKILLS: | Speaking, listening, writing |
| TIME: | 40 Minutes |
| MATERIALS: | Worksheet, dictionaries, paper money and prices |
| OBJECTIVE: | To learn about international currencies and practice numbers |
| PREPARATION: | Activity I: Worksheet, Part A with International currencies symbols, Activity II: Worksheet, Part B with numbers (fill in the missing letter), Activity III: Auction, “make a sentence” |
PROCEDURE:
1. Warm up: Ask the students to recall their student numbers aurally. (5 minutes)
2. Activity I: Have the students match the international currency symbol with the country. (10 minutes) Examples:
3. Activity II: Have the students fill in the missing letters on the worksheet. Examples. 15 = fi_te_n, 50 = f_f_y, 16 = six_e_n, 60 =s i_ty, 100 = h_nd_ed, 1000 = one t_ou_and. Encourage students to use their dictionaries. (10 minutes)
4. Activity III: Each class member is to receive an amount of paper money. Have the students bid for the prises in English aurally (not just “yes”). The highest bidder wins. The winner must come up to the front and attempt to make a sentence to claim the prize. Each prise is in an envelope. The student may not see the prise. Create a few sentences with usage of numbers in it. Example “Ichiro has 55 points”. (20 minutes)
5. Summary: Have the students tell you the total amount of money they have left over. (5 minutes)
NOTE:
There were only 15-20 students in my class. I used this lesson at an extremely low level night school (visit). Most students have part time jobs and are highly unmotivated to do anything. This was one lesson plan that all the students participated in.
