Movie Previews

Lindsay Tribe

GRADE LEVEL: Lower-level SHS
SKILLS: Listening, writing
TIME: 50 minutes
MATERIALS: Worksheets (Parts of a Movie and Movie Preview), 6-8 movie previews, DVD/VCR player and TV
OBJECTIVES: Listen to natural English in an authentic context, practice listening for specific information, identify the title and genre of a movie, recognize specific features in a story

PROCEDURE:

Introduction: (5m)

Introduce the topic of movies. Ask students to name some of their favorite movies. Explain the concept of a movie preview.

NB: Movie previews are similar to commercials.

Teach: (10m)

Teach the parts of a movie using Parts of a Movie worksheet. Write the main parts of a movie on the board. Give them the title of a movie they all know (ie: Harry Potter) and get them to fill in the information for that movie.

“Genre” is “janru” in Japanese. Examples of the information for Harry Potter:

  1. Genre: Adventure
  2. Star: Daniel Radcliffe
  3. Title: Harry Potter
  4. Story: It has action, a hero, a villain, a problem, mystery, comedy.

Watch Previews: (25m)

Explain how to use the Movie Preview worksheet. Watch one movie preview at a time, giving 1-2 mins between each one for students to fill in information.

Remind students that the title of a movie usually appears at the end of the preview. You may wish to pause the player so they can copy the title down.

Review: (7m)

Have students check their answers as class. As you review each preview, ask students to give you the answers and tell you what they think the movie is about.

NOTES:

You can do a lot of activities using movie previews with your students. Previews are a great way to keep your students interested and paying attention since they are short and only use the most important key words and phrases in a movie.

VARIATIONS:

Have students record or fill-in vocabulary from a key dialogue in the preview

After a preview, have students write a prediction on the outcome of the story

Have students create movie posters for the previews using the parts of a movie vocabulary
