Monster Body Parts Review
Andy Whitmyre
| GRADE LEVEL: | SHS lower levels |
| SKILLS: | Listening, speaking, reading, writing, drawing, and creative thinking |
| TIME: | One Class |
| MATERIALS: | Worksheets, stereo with stimulating non-lyrical music (optional), body part cards, camera, pictures of other monsters |
| OBJECTIVES: | Review and master body parts vocabulary, draw a picture (monster) from instructions in English, think outside the box, build a class picture (monster) one part at a time, practice describing, using body vocabulary, read and present other students' work |
PROCEDURE:
1.) Review Body Parts Vocabulary (head, legs, elbow, ankle, arms, eyelashes, esc…)
- Use worksheets, flash cards, or any other method of choice to review the body parts vocabulary taught in a previous lesson.
- Quiz the students on the vocab. (both ways, Eng-Jap and Jap-Eng) make sure they are fast and consistent.
2.) Draw a Monster!
- Pass out worksheet or paper on which to draw a monster.
- Give instructions (explain to the students that they will draw a monster from the instructions and body parts you give in English. Tell them to use multiple colors and to make the monster as crazy and outlandish as they possibly can. The most insane monster drawing that follows the instructions will be rewarded in the teacher's room at the end of the day!)
- Dictate the Body Parts of the monster in English using the vocab. (I start from the body, limbs, and head and then work out and add detail. Make it crazy! I always say multiple heads and arms, and a ridiculous amount of eyes!) (3 heads, 5 arms and 13 eyes! esc…) (It helps to write down specifically what you said.) While the students are drawing you can put on some inspirational music in the background… music without vocals works best.
3.) Draw the Class Monster!
- Give instructions (Tell the students that they will draw a monster together as a class now. Students will get a card with one body part written on it. They must come to the board and draw only that part of the monster. Include lots of parts so as many students as possible get a card and come to the board)
- Pass out the body part cards at random or to kids who you think drew that part well on their own monster.
- Students come to the board and draw the monster one part at a time.
- When it is done, take a picture of it to use in other classes.
4.) Describe Other Monsters.
- Divide into groups of 4-6 Students
- Pass out the pictures of other monsters (the pictures you took of other classes' monsters. If doing the lesson for the first time, draw the other monsters yourself or have your JTEs, other teachers, or even Kyoto Sensei draw monsters) (The students love seeing other class' work!)
- As a group, the students must write down a description in English of the monster using the vocab in complete sentences. (give them some examples on the board)
- Collect the pictures with descriptions and re-distribute to other groups.
- Have the new group present (read aloud and show the picture of) the other group's description. (either elect a speaker, jan-ken, or have everyone in the group take turns speaking)
Collect everything.
NOTES:
The Lesson can be varied for higher or lower levels by adjusting the difficulty of the vocabulary words. Also, more detailed instructions for the monster dictation can be given (add adjectives…. 3 hairy long necks…etc. ..) The student's group description will also depend on their level and expectations can be adjusted accordingly. This is a lot for my classes to do in one 50 minute lesson. Try to get through # 2-3 quickly.
