Making Plans

Ellie Laird

GRADE LEVEL: Mid-level SHS
SKILLS: Reading, writing, listening, speaking
TIME: One 50-minute lesson
MATERIALS: Handouts
OBJECTIVE: Asking and giving information relation to date, time, and location

PROCEDURE:

  1. Warm-Up: Use a game such as Criss-Cross to review target vocabulary (times of day, places to visit, etc) (5 minutes).
  2. Model Dialogue: Before listening, students read the dialogue and fill in the blanks using words from the word box. Teachers then read the dialogue and students check their own answers. Teachers explain any unfamiliar expressions. Students can then do chorus-reading, repeating the dialogue after the teachers (10 minutes).
  3. Preparing for Individual Dialogues: Students read the directions and write their answers to questions on the handout. Teachers explain unfamiliar words (10 minutes).
  4. Writing a Phone Conversation: Students write their own phone conversations based on the model dialogue (15 minutes).
  5. Role-Playing: Students practice saying each other’s written dialogues. Volunteers/draftees can be asked to perform in front of the class, or in front of the teachers. Volunteers can be rewarded with food, prizes, or bonus points (10 minutes).

NOTES:

This lesson is writing-intensive and therefore works best with serious or enthusiastic students. The dialogue can be simplified to accommodate lower-level students. To make the writing section easier, give students a more complete format. Add an information-gap chart to encourage students to speak with more than one partner.
