Let’s Go on a Trip
Heather Wrage
| GRADE LEVEL: | SHS 1-3, pretty low level |
| SKILLS: | Speaking, practical skills |
| TIME: | 65 minutes (my school is a little different). You can do one or the other dialogue, or breaking it into two different classes works well (even do a class about passports before too), or you can just talk really fast |
| OBJECTIVES: | To teach students something that they can see a practical application for, instead of these pointless dialogues, like Timmy goes to the American Embassy |
MATERIALS/PREPARATION:
- For Warm-Up: Paper with the name of a country written on it, 1 or 2 for each student (or you can whisper the name, but students are inclined to shout whatever you say, which ruins the game)
- Attached handout
- Attached airline tickets for as many students as are in your class
- Cards with seat numbers numbered A1, B1, C1, D1, E1, A2, B2, etc. for as many students as are in your class
PREPARATION:
- Write country names on slips of paper
- Make seat number cards
- Make tickets, cut them up, and write seat numbers on the tickets
PROCEDURE:
Warm-Up (10 minutes)
- Have the class pick pairs. One half of all the pairs line up along one wall, the other half against the other wall
- Hand out the slips of paper to the students on one side of the classroom. Help them pronounce the country with whispers
- Students with the slips of paper have to shout their countries all together, on your count, to their partners, while the partners listen and try to pick out the name
- Repeat with the other half of the pair
Explanation (5 minutes)
- ALT explains that there are 3 steps to going on a trip
- First, you have to decide where to go
- Second, you have to buy your ticket
- Third, you have to get on the plane
- JTE writes steps as ALT talks, and checks for comprehension
Deciding Where to Go (10 minutes)
- Students name a few destinations they want to go to (the countries they just used in the Warm-Up, for example)
- JTE or ALT writes them on the board
- Students vote as a class on the place they want to go (leave their choice written on the board with the steps)
- Whichever teacher isn’t running the vote can hand out the worksheets
Buying Your Ticket (15 minutes)
- JTE and ALT demonstrate the 1st dialogue in front of the class
- Students practice in their pairs.
- While they do this, the JTE and ALT put the seat number cards in the corner of every desk (don`t put them out in order, it makes it too easy)
- When the students are ready, JTE and ALT go through the class watching pairs do the dialogue, handing out a ticket when the students finish
- Students write their name and destination on their ticket.
Getting on the Plane (5 minutes)
- Students have three minutes to get out of their seats and find the seat number that matches their ticket.
Going on the Flight (15 minutes)
- JTE and ALT demonstrate the dialogue in front of the class.
- Students practice the 2nd dialogue with their partner
- JTE and ALT read it with them, playing the part of the flight attendant
(Make sure you tell your especially genki students you don’t have anything they ask for. Make them think of something not on the sheet, or just enjoy the confusion on their faces)
