Let’s Party!
Matthew Basey
| GRADE LEVEL: | SHS 1 |
| SKILLS: | Reading, writing, speaking listening, team-work and presentation |
| TIME: | 65 minutes |
| MATERIALS: | Each group will have a party planning pack: each party planning pack will have: a guest list and six/seven invitation cards |
| OBJECTIVES: | For students to make groups and interact in English to plan their ideal party, for all students to make a presentation at the front of the class |
PROCEDURE:
1) Group-making (10 minutes)
- The ALT explains the theme of today’s lesson: students will plan and present in groups about their ideal party. Students make groups of six or seven – either get the JTE to put them in groups or use a group-making warm-up such as “Broken Hearts”.
2) Explanation of the Party Planning Pack (5 minutes)
- The ALT gives each group a party planning pack and a few minutes to read and roughly understand the handouts. The ALT then explains the things that are in the party planning pack.
- After the JTE should check that the students understand what the ALT said.
3) Explanation of what to do (5 minutes)
- The ALT explains what the students have to do: plan and present their dream party to the class. Each group will have about twenty five minutes time to plan and three minutes to give their presentation.
- The JTE explains how to plan the party. Each group has one “Guest List” on which each student writes the name of one person they want to invite to the party and why. The students pass the paper around the group with each student writing once.
- Each student in each group has a “Party Invitation Card” and work together to complete this card.
- Finally the students decide how to present this information to the class. The students may decide how to present this information to the class, but each student must speak once during the presentation.
4) Planning Time (25 minutes)
- The students work in their groups to plan the party and decide how to present it to the class. The ALT and JTE should walk around the class during this time and help the students.
5) Presentation Time (20 minutes)
- Each group will come to the front of the class and give a presentation about their party.
- Each group must come to the front, present and then go back to their seats within three minutes.
- The ALT should write the main points of each party on the blackboard and get the students to choose which party they like the most.
NOTES:
- A way to improve this might be to use smaller groups to make sure each student has to say more in each presentation. Also next time I will give each student a simple worksheet to complete during each presentation so that they have to be more active during presentation time.
- There are many ways to vary this lesson plan and I think the timings are flexible. My main aim was to make sure students had to work and communicate together, and to make sure each student spoke once during the presentation.
