Effective TT Activities

Heather O’Neil

GRADE LEVEL: SHS, any level, any grade
TIME: 10 or more minutes (depending)
SKILLS: Writing, listening

Practicing Grammar Points

MATERIALS: 3 or 4 advertisements from English magazines, story starters for each advertisement, worksheet explaining activity in English and space for their writing
OBJECTIVE: To experience using new grammar points in a creative fun way

This activity is good at the end of a class to practice what they just learned or can be used as a review for what they learned in a previous class.

  1. Explain activity to the class.
  2. Show the advertisement to the class and begin telling them the starter for the story. Introduce who the people are in the picture and what they are doing.
  3. After the 3 sentence story starter, ask a question for the students to create the answer. Have the questions be about the situation you just explained.
  4. Give them a few minutes between each story.
  5. Ask for volunteers to read their stories a loud.

English to English Dictionary Listening Exercise

MATERIALS: Worksheet, list of words with spaces for students to write the definitions
OBJECTIVE: To get students to think about meanings of works using English (very useful when outside of the Japanese speaking society.)

  1. Make a list of English words that your students understand, easy ones would be Job titles, Sports, Place Names, Famous People, ETC.
  2. At random read a definition for each of the words.
  3. Students must choose which word you are describing and write down the definition (dictation).

Example: English: Your favorite subject in the entire world!
