Doctor, Doctor!

Maggie Sgier

GRADE LEVEL: SHS 1
SKILLS: Listening & Speaking
TIME: One class
MATERIALS: Dialogue, Listening Comprehension Worksheet, Slips of Paper
OBJECTIVES: To practice going to the doctor and reviewing medical vocabulary

PROCEDURE:

  1. Begin with a short dialogue between the ALT and JTE. One person is the patient and the other is the doctor. The students must listen to the dialogue and complete the listening comprehension worksheet.
  2. Go over the answers and review important vocabulary words.
  3. Hand out one slip of paper to each student. Half of the class will be patients, so their papers have a medical problem written on them. The other half of the class will be doctors, so they have solutions/treatments written on them. Make sure there is only one doctor for each patient.
  4. Give the students a few minutes to understand their papers and look up new words in the dictionary.
  5. Now, each patient and doctor must find his/her match. Put the sample dialogue on the board for the students to follow. Tell them to stand up, walk around the room and use the sample dialogue to find their patient/doctor. After they find their match, they can return to their desk.

NOTES:

It helps to have different colors of paper for the patients and doctors. Also, if there are a few students left at the end of the activity who haven’t found their match, bring them up to the font of the class and help them find their doctor/patient. Students sometimes make mistakes and sit down without finding their real match.
