GRADE LEVEL: | 1st year SHS, middle level |
TIME: | 1-2 45 minute lessons depending on the level |
MATERIALS: | Hand-outs |
OBJECTIVES: | To learn new vocabulary and be able to give directions fluently using the new vocabulary |
PROCEDURE:
- Do listening warm-up 1 to check if students know the difference between turn left, turn right, it’s on the left, it’s on the right and go straight.
- Do warm-up 2 giving student A and B different mazes. Student A then closes their eyes and student B guides A through the maze. Student B then closes their eyes and student B guides them. Drill above pronunciation afterwards.
- Using worksheet 1 ask students to match the Japanese and English through guess work and previous knowledge. Drill new vocabulary.
- Test students retention of knowledge of new vocabulary by matching pictures and sentences on worksheet 2.
- Finally do a gap-fill activity to practice using directions vocabulary with worksheet 3 and 4. Student A has the gaps for B and B has the gaps for A. They should both end up with the same map. The students should use new vocabulary learned from worksheet 1 and 2. Introduce block to help students give complete directions. Ask students to memorise the dialogue while giving directions to each other.
NOTES:
There is quite a lot of Japanese on the sheets to make a bridge between oral communication and non-oral communication classes. You can delete the Japanese from each sheet if you prefer and use pictures instead.
