Descriptions and Imagination

Richard Forse

GRADE LEVEL: SHS all
SKILLS: Listening, speaking, writing, imagination
TIME: one class
MATERIALS: double sided worksheet with about 20 numbered random pictures or photos of interesting things. Another blank sheet of paper to work on
OBJECTIVES: To practice describing things, to use imagination to encourage the use of English that Ss might not have thought about before, to listen to each others' English and to have fun using it

PROCEDURE:

  1. Warm up exercise. Maybe reviewing key describing words that they have learnt previously.
  2. Hand out the photo/ picture sheets and the blank paper.
  3. Get them to go through the pictures describing what they see. For example : an expensive car or an angry man. Depending on the level, they can make the descriptions more complicated. (The pictures will be in black and white so they can use their imagination for colour etc.) If there is not enough time half the class can do pics 1-10 and the rest 11-20 etc.
  4. Go around the class and get them to read out what they have written.
  5. Review and correct common mistakes or show some more examples.
  6. Story Time. Tell the students to choose 5 of the 20 pictures. Using the 5 they have to make a story to include all the pictures. Example: If there is a car, an island, a plane, Darth Vader and a sandwhich then the story could be- I drove to the airport and flew to Hawaii. I met Darth Vader and ate lunch with him. Tell them that they can make it funny or as silly as they like.
  7. Help the students with writing and vocab. Give hints if they need it.
  8. Listen to some of the stories. Maybe ask questions to the class after to check if they listened.
  9. Collect the sheets to check the rest.

NOTES:

Maybe try this lesson after the main lessons of tenses, descriptions, prepositions and others have been learnt. They can then look back at their notes if they need to. It gives them a chance to use what they have learned in a hopefully fun way.

The lesson is very flexible and all timings and levels can be altered.
