Where is the Lion?

Kimberly Lyman

GRADE LEVEL: Special Education
SKILLS: Listening, speaking
TIME: Twenty minutes
MATERIALS: Animal cards (the more the better)
OBJECTIVES: To learn the question “Where is the ~?”
To learn prepositions in, on, under
To review animal names

PROCEDURE:

1. Get everyone’s attention by showing the cards and having the students call out the animal’s names.

2. Introduce the key phrase “Where is the ~?”

3. Teach “It’s on/ in/ under the ~.” through examples and gestures.

4. Have students place their heads on their desks and “go to sleep”. While they are not looking you and JTE place the cards all around the room. For example, under desks, inside books (with large portion of the card still visible), and on top of the CD player.

5. Have the students wake up and begin the game by asking “Where is the lion?” All students must search the room looking for the lion. When one student finds it, ask them again “Where is the lion?” and with a little help they should answer using the prepositions previously learned. That student now gets to keep the lion card and your JTE asks where another animal is. Continue until all animals are found. Student with the most cards in the end wins!

NOTES:

My Special Ed. Class has five kids with varying abilities. This worked great to keep everyone’s attention focused on the activity. I also taught them “It’s HERE!” so they could shout something in English when they found a card.
