What’s This?

| GRADE LEVEL: | Elementary |
| SKILLS: | Listening and speaking |
| TIME: | In-class activity (5-10 minutes) |
| MATERIALS: | Object cards (karuta style) |
| OBJECTIVES: | To practice asking and answering simple questions (“What’s this?”) |
| | To recognize new vocabulary |
PROCEDURE:
1. This is a very simple activity that can be used to help students recognize and practice new vocabulary, as well as practice a simple question/response pattern.
2. You will need to make enough cards (hand-held, playing card size) for each student and teacher to have one. On each card should be a picture of something you are studying. For example, if you have a class of 30 with a JTE and an ALT, and you are studying vegetables, you could make: 4 cards each of tomatoes, pumpkins, cucumbers, spinach, carrots, onion, lettuce, and cabbage – for a total of 32 cards.
3. After thoroughly reviewing pronunciation, distribute a card to each student.
4. Demonstrate with a teacher:
ALT (showing his or her card to the JTE): What’s this?
JTE: It’s a cucumber! (Shows his or her card to the ALT) What’s this?
ALT: It’s a tomato!
5. After the short dialogue, exchange the cards.
6. Lead a practice run-thru of the dialogue to make sure everyone understands.
7. Instruct students to stand up and mingle through the room, asking others “What’s this?”
8. You can either put a time limit on the activity (“Try to change cards 3 times in 1 minute!”) or see which student can complete 5 changes the fastest.
NOTES:
If I put a time limit on the games, for example 1 minute, I will usually let the activity continue for as long as the students seem interested.
Other topics to use: fruits, animals, colors, sports, numbers, and seasonal/holiday vocabulary
