What’s Missing?

| GRADE LEVEL: | ES 1-6 |
| SKILLS: | Speaking, Vocabulary, Memory |
| TIME: | 5 to 10 Minutes |
| MATERIALS: | Blackboard, Flashcards, Magnets |
| YEAR: | 2007 |
OBJECTIVES:
1. To review vocabulary words using a memory game
PROCEDURE:
1. Teach or review the vocabulary words with the students using flashcards. As you practice or review each word, hang the flashcards on the blackboard. After hanging all of the cards on the board, have the students repeat them one more time.
2. Tell the students to close their eyes and put their heads down. While their eyes are closed, remove one of the flashcards and hide it from view.
3. Tell the students to open their eyes and ask them “What’s missing?” Tell students to raise their hands and say the correct answer in English. After the students guess the missing card, hang it back on the blackboard.
4. Repeat this process, each time taking down progressively more flashcards. Each student can guess one missing card (this keeps the activity from being dominated by one or two higher-level or faster students). For the final time, remove all of the flashcards.
5. Play until you’ve gone through all the flashcards or for about 5-10 minutes.
NOTES:
• I don’t claim that this is my original idea. I’m sure it’s been mentioned many times in ALT workshops. But it is my favorite kind of elementary school activity: quick, simple, and fun. I’ve used it with many different kinds of vocabulary and all grade levels at ES.
• It would really easy to make variations of this activity. If you like to use realia in your classes, you can easily use objects instead of flashcards. I’ve done this when teaching fruits. You can also divide the class into teams if you want a more competitive activity.
