What sport do you play?

Rebecca Ladhams

GRADE LEVEL: Special Education
SKILLS: Listening, speaking
TIME: Fifteen minutes
MATERIALS: A timer, an envelope, cards with a picture of a different sport on each (volleyball, baseball, table-tennis, soccer, cricket, rugby, tennis, badminton, etc) and photocopies of these cards
OBJECTIVES: To teach the verb play
To teach the English names of different sports
To practice asking and answering to ‘What sport do you play?’

PROCEDURE:

1. Allow a student to pick a card from the photocopied set without looking. This goes into the ‘Top secret’ envelope. I usually put this envelope up on the board.

2. Deal the remainder of the cards out between the students. At least two each is fine.

3. Put about 1.5 minutes on the timer. The first student asks their neighbor ‘What sport do you play?’ Their neighbor chooses one of their cards and answers that they play that sport. For example, if they select the card with ‘rugby’ on it they will reply ‘I play rugby.’ This person then asks their neighbor what sport they play and allow them to choose one of their cards.

4. Continue doing this round the circle until the beeper goes. When the beeper goes you reveal the ‘Top secret’ photocopy and find out who has the original version. You can either tell your students that it’s really good to have the top secret card or really bad.

NOTES:

If you need more cards, I would make ‘I play’ sports on one color card and ‘I do’ and/or ‘I go’ sports on different colors.

I play this game with three students. If you have a large number of students you could give them one card each and send them off around the room to ask each other and then swap cards.

This game can be played to teach other conversations, i.e. ‘What foods do you like?’
