| MATERIALS: | Weather flashcards, world map, world map worksheets |
OBJECTIVES:
1. To learn about and practice describing the weather in English
2. To learn about geography
3. To use English to communicate
PROCEDURE:
1. I taught 5 different kinds of weather to get the kids thinking:
It's rainy
It's cloudy
It's windy
It's snowy
It's sunny
After that, we played a game.
2. Divide the children into groups and put up a large world map on the board.
3. Give each group a smaller map of the world. Each map has 5 countries marked on it.
4. In their groups, the children have to decide which country has what weather. They draw a picture to mark this weather on the country.
5. When the children have finished, everyone turns round to look at the board.
6. The teacher chooses one country, and one person from each group stands up and says what weather they chose for that country. Write/draw this on the board.
7. Read off the real weather from your sheet.
8. The nearest group to predicting the weather wins one point.
9. Repeat from step 6 until all countries are done.
10. The group with the most countries at the end has won.
NOTES:
This game seemed to work well with the third grade upwards.
