Wave Runner
Crystal Chun
| GRADE LEVEL: | JHS 1st-3rd year |
| SKILLS: | Listening, Spelling |
| TIME: | 10~50 minute warm-up/game |
| MATERIALS: | Chalkboard, chalk |
| OBJECTIVES: | To assist with the student’s listening and spelling skills in a fun and enthusiastic way |
PROCEDURE:
1. Split the class into teams by columns. If columns are uneven, move students accordingly.
2. Ask each column of students to practice “the wave” within their team.
3. Say a word from the textbook or one that the students should know how to spell. The first student in each row will race up to the board and spell the word. If the student doesn’t know how to spell the word, they can ask their team for help. They can also look in the textbook, but they can’t bring the textbook up to the board.
4. After the student finishes they will sit down and do the wave with their team. The first team to finish their wave will have their word checked by the ALT, after all groups have finished writing their word on the board. Students are not allowed to change the spelling once the team has finished the wave. If the word is spelled correctly, that team gets a point.
5. If the word is spelled wrong, then the second team’s word is checked, and so on. The team that spells the word correctly will receive one point.
6. Repeat. The next student in each row competes for that round, and so on.
NOTES:
For higher levels you can have the students write phrases or simple sentences.
