“My name is Totoro” Bingo
Angie Broad
| GRADE LEVEL: | Elementary 3-6 JHS 1 |
| SKILLS: | Speaking, listening |
| TIME: | 35 minutes (used with self introduction which takes about 10 minutes) |
| MATERIALS: | Stamped Bingo Sheet |
| OBJECTIVES: | To introduce basic introductions “Hello, My name is ~” |
Preparation:
Make enough copies of the Bingo card for all your students. With a stamp, stamp one box on each card to signify that card’s special name.
PROCEDURE:
1. Introduce basic greetings “Hello, Good Morning etc.
2. Teach “My name is”, using basic repeat technique. I usually do a little dance or something to the tune of the sentence to keep the kids interested and smiling since this can be a little boring.
3. Next, play interviewer as the teacher first, “What’s your name?” Teacher replies, “My name is Kyoko.” Do this twice to let the kids hear the question, but don’t try to teach this.
4. Next go around the classroom quickly asking each child what their name is and helping them repeat the response back to you (This is easier if they are wearing nametags as you can prompt them). Get everyone to clap after each introduction as this keeps the kids focused on what you are doing rather than talking to their friends.
5. Once they all remember the sentence pass out the bingo sheets, which you have pre-stamped, over one different box on each card. Explain that the stamped name is their new name.
6. Model the dialogue with the teacher and ALT, “Hello, my name is Totoro” JTE: “Hello, my name is Anpanman.” With older grades you can also add “Nice to meet you” although I found my grade 4 class could not remember the whole dialogue as they got too excited.
7. Explain to the class that the aim of the game is to meet people, while doing the dialogue, to discover their friend’s secret name. Tell the class you want them to get their friends to sign under their name and tell them you want two lines full to win Bingo. Have small stickers for prizes or if you just write their name up on the blackboard in numbered order they get just as happy.
8. “Teach Goodbye” and “See you”.
NOTES:
This is really a modified version of a game my JTE taught me. I just made a new bingo card with more fun names which attracted the Elementary school kid’s attention. Stamping each card differently takes the longest. I used a cute stamp and gold ink which made it extra nice to look at for the kids.
