Telephone speed dating

Dan Jaspersen

GRADE LEVEL: JHS 2+
SKILLS: Speaking and Listening
TIME: 20–30 minutes
MATERIALS: Worksheet and individualized information sheets

OBJECTIVES:

1. Lots and lots of talking – give the students a chance to speak in English and practice communicating without looking at someone.

2. Lots and lots of listening – the students will need to listen very carefully to catch the important information.

PROCEDURE:

1. Before class – print off the worksheet and info sheets. Cut the info into individual sized pieces. (see attachment)

2. In class – After passing out the worksheets and info (they shouldn’t show the info to anyone else), practice reading them and show them how to insert their times and places. Demonstrate the activity with the JTE – Stand back to back, acting like you’re talking on the telephone and go through the conversation. Before you have the students move thoroughly explain the activity.

3. Have the students move the desks to the side of the room, and put their chairs back to back in lunch groups. You’ll have groups of 5-6 with their chairs back to back.

4. My classrooms have windows so I always say the person closer to the windows is ‘A’ and the person by the door in ‘B’. The students will be sitting back to back in their own chair.

5. The students have 2 minutes to get through the conversation and ‘B’ needs to write the Activity, Time and Place at the bottom on their worksheet.

6. After 2 minutes – Everyone rotates one seat to the right. If they are on an end with no seat to the right, they swing around to the other side. So now everyone has a new partner and some people will have switched roles ( A => B or vice versa).

7. Again, the students go through the conversation and ‘B’ writes the info.

8. Continue this process for 5 or 6 rounds. This should be enough for the students to become comfortable with the conversation, and to have played both ‘A’ and ‘B’ a few times.

NOTES:

  • The worksheet attached is a very basic example, but it is the one I used in my JHS 2nen classes. Of course, you can change the content, and level of difficulty to fit your needs. I’ve used this in my adult class at a pretty high level. Also, shortening the time limit can help create a sense of urgency in the students

  • With more advanced students I’ve had them create their own personal info. They set the event, time and meeting place. That tends to bring it closer to home for them.

  • For the sake of space I formatted the worksheet and the personal info to fit into one page
