Teen Win Lose or Draw

| GRADE LEVEL: | SHS (any grade/any level) |
| SKILLS: | Speaking |
| TIME: | 45 minutes |
| MATERIALS: | Vocabulary cards (single words or phrases) |
| YEAR: | 2007 |
OBJECTIVES:
1. To review vocabulary
2. To review understanding of the meaning of words not just their translation
PROCEDURE:
1. The ALT and JTE divide the class in half and ask the students to name their groups. The ALT divides the blackboard in half and writes the name of each group on the corresponding side.
2. The ALT and JTE will ask a representative from each team to come to the front. The JTE will monitor one group and the ALT will monitor the other. The ALT and JTE show the representatives a vocabulary card and ask the students to use only drawings (not written or verbal words) to explain the meaning to their groups.
3. The ALT and JTE have to encourage the students to try harder if they are close to guessing the correct word. There is a two minute time limit on guessing the word. Since both groups are guessing the same word simultaneously, the game is a race against each other and against time.
4. Once a student guesses correctly, 5 points are allocated to that team and the representatives return to their seats. New students are chosen for the next round.
NOTES:
This is an activity that requires very little preparation. If you have time, make sure that the vocabulary you are reviewing encompasses many previously studied lessons and does not focus solely on one theme.
You may want to include penalties for speaking Japanese (or the perceived threat that speaking Japanese will result in a 5 point deduction) to encourage students to guess in English.
It is amazing how much accumulated vocabulary the students have in their memory and many are surprised that they themselves have guessed the word, so encourage them to continue guessing if they are close even if time is up.
