| GRADE LEVEL: | ES (any grade level) |
| SKILLS: | Speaking, Listening |
| TIME: | 15 minutes |
| MATERIALS: | Game sheet, picture cards (small, medium, and large) |
OBJECTIVES:
To learn and practice saying bug names.
PROCEDURE:
1. Start by reviewing or introducing the bugs using the big picture cards (ant, bee, beetle, fly, dragonfly, butterfly, ladybug, and spider). Have the students repeat after you as you point to the corresponding picture card.
2. Next, give the medium-sized bug cards to the students and have each student stand up and say the name of the bug out loud. It is better to time the students so they can compete with the other classes.
3. After they practiced saying the bug names (including spider), put them into groups of four or five. Give each group a game sheet with a spider web on it. The game sheet is optional but it gives the game a little color and more fun to look at than the desks.
4. Next, group a deck of small picture cards with the bugs on it. Keep the cards face down. The goal is to save the bugs from the spider by picking a bug card and saying the bug name in English. If the student can’t say it, the other students should try to help him/her. If a student picked the spider card, all the bug cards that were saved must be returned to the web and the group starts again from scratch. The first team to save all the bugs leaving the spider card faced down is the winner.
NOTES:
- It is nice to prepare doubles for the bugs so you can extend the game a bit by adding more cards while they are playing.
- If you can, it’s better if you laminate or put the cards in a plastic slip to protect them from bending.
