Using the Sendai Subway Map
Rosalee Maffitt
| GRADE LEVEL: | SHS 1 (adaptable depending on student level) |
| SKILLS: | Speaking, Listening, Reading, Writing |
| TIME: | 50 minutes/Two part lesson with lower level students |
| MATERIALS: | Worksheet, (On Air Communication I textbook, or any other similar one) |
OBJECTIVES:
1. To use English in a situation to which students can relate.
2. To reiterate price and directions vocabulary.
3. (Can compliment a textbook lesson.)
PROCEDURE:
1. Greeting (1 minute)
2. Warm-up ( 5 minutes)
Anything to get them verbalizing in English, i.e. Katakana v. English, tongue twister, hot potato (using price or direction vocabulary as review)
3. Sample dialogue (from a textbook or you can make one as part of a handout) (5 minutes)
- JTE/ALT demonstrate dialogue
- If textbook have students keep books closed on the first repetition, open textbooks, ALT/JTE repeat dialogue
4. Handout worksheet (3-10 minutes depending on students)
5. W/JTE anticipate student questions
- Answer them on the board, i.e. vocabulary and grammar questions
6. If using textbook, emphasize vocabulary activity here
7. Have students mark dialogue/take notes in another color pen
8. Prep students with map
9. Can play “10 questions”…or however many questions you see fit, 2 or 3 is probably enough as you do not want this to take more than 3 or 4 minutes
- Example questions depending on student level:
| What is this called (in English)? | Target: map (introduce vocab. if necessary) |
| Is this a car map? | Target vocab: subway (using vocabulary from lesson) |
| What city is this? | Target vocab: city (fulfilling realia objective) |
| Where are you? | Target answer: Kawara Machi (actively reading map) |
| How much is it from Kawara Machi to Nagamachi Minami? | (using vocab/actively reading map) |
- Order the questions from easiest to most difficult
10. Practice dialogue aloud as a class
- I usually substitute “Badahdahdahduh…” where there is a blank
- If using textbook, sets students up for a substitution task
11. Complete dialogues in pairs (5 minutes)
12. Decide where going/fill in the blanks
13. Partners practice dialogues with each other
- If textbook, this mimics a substitution/practice task/activity
14. Perform dialogues (if time, otherwise use it as a warm-up next time) (5 minutes)
15. Choose 1 group or however many you see fit
16. Classmates listen to the directions and fill in the grid
NOTES:
- The map can be adapted to show time instead of prices.
- Special thanks go to Sakiko Tanaka who passed this worksheet on to me.
