Scavenger Hunt

Jocelyn Nadeau

GRADE LEVEL: JHS 2
SKILLS: Reading (Speaking, Listening optional)
TIME: 50 minutes
MATERIALS: A worksheet with directions to clues found in and around the school, Clue cards posted in the appropriate places in and around the school, Prizes or rewards
YEAR: 2007

OBJECTIVES:

1. To have students follow instructions in English

2. To have students succeed at using English for a practical purpose

PROCEDURE:

Students should already be comfortable with a list of vocabulary words prior to the activity (way, up, down, left, right, turn, straight, corner, next, first, second, etc...). Explain the activity to the students the class before the activity is to take place as you’ll need the full 50 minutes to do the activity. Hand out the worksheet to each group of students (4-5 students per group) and remind them that they can choose the order in which they want to collect the clues. This will force them to read all the clues first and think of the most efficient route to collect all clues. It will also prevent massive traffic jams at every stations. Two of the clues could lead to you and your JTE so that students also have to practice asking directions and listening to directions, not just reading.

CONCLUSION:

When the time allowed runs out, have all the students meet at a specific location and disclose results, hand out prizes!

NOTES:

This lesson can be done when you are in the appropriate section of the textbook (NH2 pp.64) or at any other time. It is best done outside on a nice day.
