The Scariest Monster
Parin Mehta
| GRADE LEVEL: | Elementary School (all grades) |
| SKILLS: | Speaking and Listening |
| TIME: | 45-50 minutes |
| MATERIALS: | “Scary Monster” worksheets, colour pencils, lively music, enlarged photo/drawing (see below), body part flashcards (see below), monster costume |
| PLACE: | This lesson is also best taught in the school gym or large hall but can be done in a normal classroom |
| OBJECTIVES: | To introduce students to parts of the body |
| | To practice numbers and counters |
| | To build confidence in communication and self-expression |
PROCEDURE:
1. Introduction/Warm Up (5 mins)
Shout out colours and body parts in pairs. The children have to touch that colour with the body part. “Red Head” would mean for example that they have to touch something red with their head. This allows you to check how many body parts they already know and is a good way to revise colours.
2. Activity A: Introduction to Body Parts (12 mins)
• Stick an enlarged photo/drawing of a popular anime character on the board and wear a costume of that character yourself.
• Split the class into two teams and hand out flashcards of body parts (taken from http://www.aminet.or.jp/~yasu/illustrations ) Each team should have a full set of cards and each student should have one card each.
• Point to a part of your costumed body and tell the teams that one student from each team must race and stick the appropriate flashcard on the appropriate section of the enlarged picture. Continue until all body parts are covered and all students have had a chance to race.
3. Activity B: Linking gestures to names (10 mins)
• Stand all children in a circle. Do stretching exercises (ichi, ni, san, shi...) but replace with English numbers.
• As you all stretch/shake each part of the body, get the children to chant the name of the body part. The sight of Spiderman pulling funny faces and dancing gets the children enthusiastic.
• Repeat until all body parts are covered and if you have time, nominate keen students to take over as “cheerleader”.
4. Activity C: The Scariest Monster (20 mins)
• Prepare copies of attached worksheet and handout to students.
• Give commands to children that will relate to their monster.
E.g. If you are a boy, draw 2 heads. If you are a girl, draw 3 heads.
If you like pizza, draw 1 leg. If you like sushi, draw 4 legs.
• Instruct students to colour their monster with crayons/pencils.
• Ask children to vote for the scariest monster in the class and award a prize to the winning artist.
NOTES:
Sometimes the children get overexcited with the costumes and the music. If you feel control is slipping out of your hands, tone down the “extras”.
