Riddles

GRADE LEVEL: | SHS 1-3 |
SKILLS: | Listening, Writing, Speaking |
TIME: | 45 minutes |
MATERIALS: | Worksheet |
OBJECTIVES:
- To improve listening comprehension
- To introduce foreign riddles to students
- To make learning English enjoyable
PROCEDURE:
1. Warm Up (10 min.) – We usually do criss cross as that is what the students are familiar with, but any warm up that you like to do is fine.
2. Fill in the Blank (25 min) - Pass out the worksheet and explain the theme and ask students to fill in the blanks as you read the passage a couple of times. Afterwards, ask the students to look up the words in a dictionary for spelling and meaning. Then ask students to come to the board to write the correct answer for each blank.
3. Solve the Riddles (10 min) – Give the students some time to think and discuss the answer amongst them. If they are having trouble with any of the riddles give them hints in English or, if necessary, in Japanese. Explain the answer after they have guessed.
ADDITIONAL NOTES:
You can adapt this lesson as well by changing any riddles or adding more that you know of. Also, we asked the students to read the passage out loud when there was extra time left. The students seemed to enjoy trying to figure out the answers in English and even the usually unresponsive ones seemed more active during this lesson.
