Quiz

| GRADE LEVEL: | Elementary school |
| SKILLS: | Listening |
| TIME: | Fifteen to thirty minutes |
| MATERIALS: | Answer sheet, questions, large pictures, props |
| OBJECTIVES: | Phrases: Over here! It’s true. The correct answer is..., this is a great way to teach about other cultures, environments, interesting world facts, your holiday, yourself, and your family |
PROCEDURE:
Ideally the class needs to be in a large, open, free moving room. Give each student an answer sheet. This sheet should have about 20 pictures (e.g. smiley faces, flags) for circling each time they get a correct answer.
Ask questions, providing 1 correct and 1 or 2 incorrect answers. It is important to use pictures or props. You and the homeroom teacher stand in different corners of the room and hold up pictures or props and call out the answers, trying to trick the students. The students then move to the answer they think is correct. The students standing by the correct answer circle one picture on their answer sheet.
The winners are the ones with the most circled pictures at the end of the session.
Using this method you are able to teach more detailed information, which, is of greater interest to the students and homeroom teacher. Using props and pictures allows you to use almost entirely English. If there is a difficult word you can always find the Japanese translation in advance.
NOTES:
This activity was taken from a workshop at the JET Programme Re-contracting Conference in Tokyo, June 2005. The workshop was presented by Tamara Miller.
I have used this activity with 5th and 6th year elementary school students.
