Phrase of the Week

| GRADE LEVEL: | SHS |
| SKILLS: | Listening, Speaking, Writing |
| TIME: | 5 minutes |
| MATERIALS: | Sheet to write down phrases |
OBJECTIVES:
1. Warm-up
2. Teach students useful, fun or slang English
3. Provide students with an opportunity to use English outside the class
PROCEDURE:
Every week spend a few minutes teaching your students a new POW, “Phrase of the Week.” You can teach them any phrase you want, but it is best if it relates to either the rest of the lesson or the time of year.
After you introduce the phrase, try to explain or act out the meaning so the students can guess the meaning and write it down in Japanese. You may want to teach them a response or about when/how to use the phrase.
After the students learn the new POW they should practice the POW (and response) with the student next to them.
NOTES:
This works as a great warm up because it is quick and gives every student a chance to warm up speaking English at the very beginning of class. Many of my students (even the ones who do not like English) often use the POWs I have taught them out of class. Here are just a few examples of POWs I have taught my students:
- Peace out
- Trick or Treat
- Piece of cake
- Dropped the ball
- Bring it on
This is also a good way for students to use English outside the classroom, even if it is only a phrase or two. With some of them, you can create an opportunity for the students to use, for example, with the POW “Trick or Treat,” I told students if they came to the teacher’s office and used the POW then I would give them candy. Once you get them there you can ask them some questions in English if you want.
