Melissa Hughes
| GRADE LEVEL: | JHS Grade 1 (can be easily adapted to suit any grade or level) |
| SKILLS: | Listening, Writing, Reading |
| TIME: | About 10 minutes |
| MATERIALS: | Notebooks, pens |
OBJECTIVES:
1. To practice listening and writing.
2. To study a phonics point.
PROCEDURE:
1. Dictate a simple story, or separate sentences, to students in English.
2. Write the correct sentences on the blackboard and ensure students have corrected their mistakes.
3. Ask students to circle the phonetically similar words. Check the answers.
NOTES:
- I tried this activity with “Magic e” after previously spending some time explaining and practicing “Magic e”. I used the following exciting story:
My name is Mike. I am nine years old. I like cake. I play baseball at home every
day. Nice to meet you.
- The first time I tried this activity with Grade 1 students it took a fair amount of time as they weren’t used to dictation. So, I kept the story simple. The second time around the students would definitely be able to write more, or more complicated sentences.
