Phonics (Little preparation)

Melissa Hughes

GRADE LEVEL: JHS or ES
SKILLS: Listening, Reading
TIME: About 10 minutes
MATERIALS: Worksheets, pens

OBJECTIVES:

1. To have fun.

2. To practice listening and reading.

PROCEDURE:

1. Make a worksheet with words written randomly over the page. The words could be phonetically similar words, new vocabulary, or vocabulary to revise.

2. Have students make pairs, and make sure each pair has one worksheet and two different coloured pens.

3. Say some simple sentences or a story using the words written on the page. When students hear the word they race to circle the word first. The same word could be repeated any number of times. Students can get pretty noisy, so you need to make sure that after their initial excitement after hearing each word they quickly get ready to listen out for the next word.

4. Ask the students to count how many times they won.

NOTES:

  • This game also works really well in elementary school using pictures instead of words.
