My Family

Parin Mehta

GRADE LEVEL: Elementary School (Grades 4-6)
SKILLS: Listening, Speaking
TIME: 40-50 minutes
MATERIALS: A4 copies of your own family photo (1 copy per pair), 1 “scenery sheet” per student, family flashcards, 1 puppet
OBJECTIVES: 1. To introduce students to members of the family (mother, father, sister, brother, grandfather and grandmother), 2. To introduce students to basic prepositions (under, on, in, next to), 3. To build confidence in communication and self-expression

PROCEDURE:

  • Warm Up/Greeting (5 mins)

  • Activity A: Introduction to Family Members (5 mins)

Print flashcards of various family members (www.aminet.or.jp/~yasu/illustrations) and introduce them to the class. At this level I use mother, father, brother, sister, grandmother and grandfather. Check pronunciation and meaning.

  • Activity B: My family (10 mins)

Hand out copies of your own family photo. Ask the students to name each member using the phrase “That’s ”. The students also enjoy guessing the age of each of your family members. Make things exciting by telling them one interesting/amusing thing about each person.

  • Activity C: Where is mother? (20 mins)

Introduce some simple prepositions (in, on, under, next too) by placing a puppet around the room in various places.

I.e The monkey/HG/Pooh-san is

Check the students understanding and then hand out copies of an everyday scene such as a family home (available at http://www.ajet.net/uploads/flashcards/ )

Explain that you will tell them where a family member is and they have to draw that person onto the scene.

Start off fairly basic but then make the sentences absurd.

E.g. Mother is ON the bed.

Father is NEXT to the piano.

Brother is IN the doghouse.

Grandmother is IN the tree

The dog is IN the shower.

  • Activity D: Review (5 mins)

Allow students to ask you questions about your family such as hobbies/names/pets etc.

Check meanings of family member names and prepositions.
