| GRADE LEVEL: | JHS |
| SKILLS: | Listening, speaking, reading |
| TIME: | One lesson |
| MATERIALS: | Cards with month names, worksheet, food items, calendar |
| OBJECTIVES: | To learn the month names in English |
| | To learn birthday in English |
| | To learn to use months and dates in practical situations |
PROCEDURE:
1. The ALT introduces the months in English. Have the students repeat after ALT.
2. Randomly pass out month cards and have your students` line up in the correct order. Next, have the students go down the line reading their month’s name. Give all students a chance to read a month. Start again if they make a mistake.
3. Teach students the English day counting pattern.
-All numbers that end with a one get a st at the end; for example, 1st, 21st, 31st, etc.
-All numbers that end with a two get an nd at the end…2nd, 22nd, 32nd, etc.
-All numbers that end with a three get an rd at the end…3rd, 23rd, 33rd, etc.
-The exceptions to the rules are the numbers 11, 12, and 13. They get a th at the end. All other numbers end with a th too; for example, 4th, 5th, 6th, 7th, 8th, 9th, 11th, 12th, 13th, 14th, 15th,…24th, 25th, 36th, 129th, etc.
4. Give students the work sheet and have them ask each other their birthdays.
Q. When is your birthday? A. It is ~.
5. Have your students identify the “use by” date on some food packages.
Q. What is the “use by” date for these ~? A. It is ~.
6. Get a calendar, point to any date, and have your students identify what day it is.
Q. What date is this? A. It is ~.
NOTES:
You may not have time to do all the activities. The lesson must be adapted according to your individual time constraints. I have found the calendar and asking their birthdays to be a great review for this lesson. I recommend using them for a warm up before class.
