Lost in Tokyo Disney Land

Isaac Young

GRADE LEVEL: JHS 2 (New Horizons 2 P. 44)
SKILLS: Listening, reading speaking
TIME: One class
MATERIALS: A classroom with moveable desks, a stopwatch, pictures of rides at Tokyo Disneyland (some samples are attached, more are available at http://www.google.com Images search), blind fold (optional)
OBJECTIVES: To practice giving and receiving directions
To get the students (and you) moving
To satisfy their strange hunger for all things Disney

PROCEDURE:

1) Go over the words and phrases from New Horizons 2 p. 44. “Can you tell me how to get to…,” “Go down this street” and “Turn right/left at the corner” are important. Make sure the students understand these phrases.

2) Have the students help you arrange the classrooms desks like a map, so that spaces between desks become streets, and that there are an adequate number of corners.

3) Make signs for particular Disneyland attractions or use the ones attached. Place them on the desks throughout the room.

4) Have the students make a line. First, have the students ask you how to get to an attraction. Direct the student to the attraction by giving them instructions of when to turn and when to go straight. The student has 30 seconds to reach their destination before being told to sit down. When a student reaches their desired attraction, bring on the next student.

5) Have the students line up again. This time, ask each student for directions to an attraction (“Can you tell me how to get to Donald’s Boat?). Give each student 30 seconds to direct you to the place. When you reach the destination, bring on the next student.

6) Keep track of times and declare the fastest students the winner.

NOTES:

This activity works best in a class with a small number of students. I had difficulty doing it with a full class. One way to deal with a large number of students is divide the students up into two lines and have the JTE direct the other line.

If you and your students are feeling particularly adventurous, do this activity with a blindfold. First blindfold the students when you give them directions, then blindfold yourself when they give you directions. This prevents cheating and adds a fun element to the class.
