Likes and Dislikes Bingo Game
Marie-Paule Puech
| GRADE LEVEL: | Elementary grades 4-6 |
| SKILLS: | Speaking, listening |
| TIME: | One class (45minutes) |
| MATERIALS: | Plastic fruit and vegetables, music, 3X3 bingo cards |
| OBJECTIVES: | To practice the sentences: “What do you like?",“I like ...” |
PROCEDURE:
1. Start the class with a quick review of fruits and vegetable names. I used flashcards.
2. Introduce the question, “What do you like?” and “I like...” Demonstrate scenario with JTE a couple of times. Next, ask a few students.
3. Give each student a 3X3 bingo card. In the centre square, get the students to write or draw what fruit or vegetable they like. Next, they must go around and ask their classmates what fruit or vegetable they like and record their answers on their bingo card. They can't write or draw the same thing twice. The game is over when the students have filled in all their squares.
4. Have the students sit in a circle with their bingo sheets in front of them. Introduce the next part of the game. I used a plastic apple and orange. The students will pass the fruit around to the beat of some cool English song and when the music stops, the people holding the fruit have to stand up. The apple must ask the orange, “What do you like?” The orange must give an answer off his or her sheet. Practice this a few times before starting the bingo game.
5. Now play for real. Each time an answer is given, all the students can cross it off on their bingo card. The first one to get three in a row, wins!
NOTES:
To make the game more interesting, I threw in a bunch of different fruits and vegetables. Each piece had a different task attached. For example, the eggplant had to stand up and do a silly dance. The kids had a lot of fun with it. If you want, you can ask the students to attach a task to the fruit or vegetable you add.
To make it a little more difficult, you can add more dialogue:
“Hello. How are you?”, “I'm fine, thank you, and you?”, “I'm fine. What do you like?”
“I like...”, “Thank you. Good bye.”, “Good bye.”
