Let’s go shopping
Stephen Joynson
| GRADE LEVEL: | JHS 3 (high level JHS 2 elective class) |
| SKILLS: | Listening, speaking, reading, writing |
| TIME: | Two classes, maybe three |
| MATERIALS: | Shopping goods, fake money, a uniform, anything that can recreate a passable shopping environment |
| OBJECTIVES: | To prepare the students for holiday shopping |
This activity will allow the students to be creative and will enhance their English skills whilst having fun. Anyone who goes abroad will inevitably do a bit of shopping and although the classroom is not the ideal place for a “real environment” a bit of work and imagination will go a long way in producing a fun and educational class.
The ALT should ideally bring as many foreign goods as they can. Japanese goods may be a little too easy for the students so how about that jar of marmite that has been sitting in your fridge since you arrived, or other omiyage that you may have lying around. These may be curious to the students and they will hopefully be brave enough to ask what such strange and wonderful things are and at what price!
Money of some sort from your own country and maybe a thrown together clerk’s uniform will enhance the authenticity of the lesson which the students will be sure to remember!
PROCEDURE:
Lesson one:
The ALT and JTE will cover the basic grammar points found in NH3 p62 and add a few more pointers depending on the ability of the students. After this the JTE and ALT perform their own original skit which will allow the students to observe what you’re aiming for. Once the students are comfortable with the grammar points/dialogue put them into small groups of “tourists” and explain to them that will be shopping for omiyage and that you will be playing the role of the clerk.
Next, have them work in their groups writing and rehearsing their skits/haggling techniques. Help and encourage the students with any questions they may have and give them hints as to what questions they may be asked by you, the clerk, for example “How many would you like”, “would you like to pay by credit card” etc.
Lesson two/three:
Have the students perform their skits and make sure they receive a nice round of applause for their efforts.
NOTES:
During the skits, it is sometimes a good idea to have the students who are not performing to take notes on who bought what and at what price etc for an after show question time.
This will keep everyone involved during the performances. You may also wish to choose one of the students to play the role of the clerk although if the class is not performing well (lower level /shy / disinterested students) then you may be needed to “ham it up” and take some of the pressure off.
Have fun with this lesson and encourage all the students to purchase at least one item. Good luck.
