Introduction:
You will definitely do this a million times and you have to make it interesting and fun. I do not think there can be too much on finding innovative ways to get your culture across. I used puzzler maker (http://www.puzzlemaker.com) to make a criss-cross puzzle.
Procedure:
1. Introduce yourself, country’s norms, folkways, mores (whatever appeals to you) with emphasis on the areas for your criss-cross puzzle. Ensure that the students understand the terms, words or phrases used. Since most words (relating to your native country) are foreign to Japanese students, I used the `katakanaization `of the words to make it easier (`pronunciation –wise`).
2. I attached a funny cartoon (anything that is native to your country) to the puzzle. In my case I attached a cartoon of the Jamaican Bobsled Team from the popular Jamaican movie `Cool Runnings`. To make it easier, I added the answers to the puzzle (they would have to figure out which clue corresponds with a specific answer). This is optional and is dependent on the students` understanding of the content. Another option is to write the areas of emphasis on the blackboard.
3. To make it more interesting and competitive, I gave a time limit and gave prizes to the three fastest finishers (preferably stamps coins etc from your country). Its also adaptable to groups. Please note that you don’t have to have prizes.
*You can simply make signatures cards for Elementary students. These signature cards are cherished by the students.
This is just another way to `spice up` your jiko shokai .
Enjoy!!!!
