Invitations
Renee Cross
| GRADE: | JHS 2 |
| SKILLS: | Speaking, Writing |
| TIME: | 45 or 50 minutes |
| MATERIALS: | Activity sheets and a set of tickets for each student. You may choose to give students more than two tickets each to make things more interesting |
| OBJECTIVE: | Students will learn and put to practice the target question,“Would you like to…” (New Horizons pp. 52-53) |
PROCEDURE:
1. The JTE and the ALT will perform a skit, demonstrating the target question and phrases as shown in the textbook. The skit will be performed twice, the first time the person being invited will accept the invitation, the second time, that person will have other plans.
2. To check the students’ understanding, the teachers will ask for an explanation of the skit.
3. The teachers will hand out the activity sheets. The students will be asked to repeat the dialogue a few times: Once as written (using the same examples as the teachers); a few times with variations added; and, finally without looking at the activity sheet (if possible).
4. The teachers will hand out a set of tickets to each student. On their own, the students will be asked to practice the dialogue again, this time substituting their own events and times in the spaces provided on their sheets. At this time, the teachers will go around and help any students who may be having difficulties.
5. The JTE and the ALT will explain and demonstrate the activity: The students are to go around the classroom and invite other students to the events printed on their tickets. If the person they invite has a ticket for an event that same day, the person must not accept the invitation! He or she already has plans and cannot go. When the students have invited 2 people to their events, they will return to their desks and fill in the bottom of their worksheets.
6. The JTE and the ALT will ask various students (using “will” from the last unit) what their plans are for next weekend.
NOTES:
Students can write a short journal entry about their pretend weekend adventures using Who, What, Where, When, Why and How to review the material on page 50 of the New Horizons text.
