How are you?
Maria E. Torres
| GRADE LEVEL: | 3rd, 4th, 5th |
| SKILLS: | Listening, speaking, using gestures |
| TIME: | 5 minutes: Teach feeling words (sad, happy, angry, hungry, sleepy, sick) |
| | 10 minutes: Teach and practice new “Q and A” phrases using big dice |
| | 15 minutes: Explain and play interview game |
| MATERIALS: | A4 size “feeling” cards (to put on the board) |
| | Large inflatable dice with feeling pictures taped on each side |
| | Small size feeling cards to give to each student (B7 size is good, set of 40) |
| | CD player, “If you’re happy and you know it” song (or any song is good ) |
| OBJECTIVES: | To learn different feeling words in English |
| | To practice asking and answering a simple question |
| | To use gestures and be expressive when speaking English |
PROCEDURE:
1. To make materials print 2 sets of A4 size “feeling” pictures and either laminate or place them in plastic sheets. One set is taped on the dice and the other is to put on the board. Use the same pictures to make B7 size cards (plastic sheets make your materials re-usable).
2. Teach feelings using large A4 size cards. Make sure to be very expressive and use gestures to explain each feeling. With the help of the homeroom teacher, show students how to ask the question “How are you?”, and how to give a response “I’m hungry”, “I’m sleepy.”
3. Practice the new question and response phrases. Students sit in a circle and gently pass the dice around until the music stops. The person holding the dice stands up and everyone asks “How are you?” The student gently throws the dice and gives the response designated on the dice before sitting down again. The music starts and the dice is passed around again. Try to have kids give a response in a loud, clear voice and encourage them to use appropriate gestures. You and the teacher can demonstrate how to do this activity. Make sure students understand they are not to throw the dice when passing it with the music and that they should gently roll the dice. If you don’t make this clear and show “BAD” examples then students can get distracted with the dice and will not concentrate on using /learning the English phrases.
4. Play interview game. Give each student one feeling card. Students must walk around and ask each other “How are you?” and then respond according to the card they are holding. Ask student to show their partner their feeling card when giving a response to the question. When a pair of students has finished asking and answering they exchange feeling cards. Now they can go and find a new partner to interview. By exchanging feeling cards students will get a chance to practice all six feelings used in the lesson.
