How many?

| GRADE LEVEL: | JHS 1 |
| MATERIALS: | Playing card sized pieces of card, 3 for each student |
| OBJECTIVES/SKILLS: | Speaking and Listening |
PREPARATION:
This game aims to practice the “How many” dialogue on page 44 New Horizon I. It mimics the game of Top Trumps. First give each student three playing card sized cards each. On the blackboard draw a diagram of the layout of the card (see file below).
Ask the students to design three superheroes explaining that they have 20 points for each character and they must divide these between the 3 given characteristics. Give the students a time limit in which to complete their cards, say 10-15minutes. I asked my students to write the sentences at the bottom before drawing or creating a character name so if they have not finished in the allotted time the game can still be played. Once the cards are completed explain how the game is played.
PROCEDURE:
1. Divide the class into groups, lunch groups are fine.
2. Each member shuffles their cards and places them face down in front.
3. Janken to see who goes first.
4. Player one and the person to their left each take the top card from their piles.
5. Player one looks at his or her card to see which is their best characteristic and asks the person to their left “How many ~ points do you have?”
6. Player two checks his or her card and replies “I have ~ points. How about you?”
7. Player two replies “I have ~ points.”
8. The player with the highest points takes both cards and places them to the bottom of their pile. In case of a draw the process is repeated with 2 fresh cards.
9. Player two then takes the next card from the top of his or her pile and repeats steps 5 – 9 with player three to his or her left. This continues round the table until one person has all the cards.
