Sarah Liu

GRADE LEVEL: SHS (high level first year or low level third year)
SKILLS: Speaking, Listening, Writing
TIME: 50 minutes
MATERIALS: Worksheets

OBJECTIVES:

1. To have the students memorize key phrases and grammar.

2. To encourage them to speak English.

3. To encourage them to use English creatively.

PROCEDURE:

1. Start with a five to ten minute warm-up.

2. Next hand out the worksheet. Introduce the topic to students. Perform the sample dialogue with the JTE in front of the students. ~5 minutes

3. Then go over the vocabulary/phrases in the boxes. Have the students fill in the blanks with the Japanese meaning, there will usually be at least one student who will raise their hand with the right guess. If the students can not guess the meaning, the JTE can inform them of the proper translation. Once all of blanks have been filled, have the students practice saying the words/phrases repeating after you. ~5 minutes

3. Once they understand the vocabulary, they are ready to do the “By Yourself” section, in which they will fill in the blanks choosing one of the words or phrases that best describes them in the situation. The JTE may want to first explain or review the grammar before they begin. ~5 minutes

4. Explain to the students that they will use the “By Yourself” and the sample dialogue as a guide to interview their fellow students. Have the students repeat the sample dialogue after you to ensure their pronunciation. ~5 minutes

5. Instruct the students to stand up and circulate to interview their classmates. ~20 minutes

6. Finally when the interviews have finished, select a few students to report on one of their classmates using the sample presentation as a guide. ~5 minutes

NOTES:

  • Various grammar and vocabulary can be substituted in this activity.

  • The students find more enjoyment if you do not allow them to read their worksheets while interviewing their peers. Give them a minute to memorize their “By Yourself” sentences. This provides a challenge and the grammar and vocabulary will be easier to memorize this way. I also have them memorize one person they interviewed for the presentation at the end. I will write the basic interview questions and the basic presentation sentence structure on the board to encourage them to memorize the important facts.
