Guess Who? (Like/Play/From Variation)
William McDuff
| GRADE LEVEL: | ES 5th-6th, JHS 1st year (pg. 28-29) |
| SKILLS: | Speaking, Listening |
| TIME: | ~50 minute lesson |
| MATERIALS: | ‘Guess Who’ reference sheet, Guess Who ID Card (included) |
| OBJECTIVES: | To practice using the key sentence; ‘Do you (like/play) ~?’ |
| | To review 'Are you from ~?' and the relevant responses |
Preparation:
1. Print out enough ID cards in the big size for each student in your class (3-5 pages).
2. Print out enough reference sheets to give one to each student (20-40 pages).
PROCEDURE:
1. Warm-Up: Criss-Cross or teacher's preference. Make sure to review 'Are you from ~?' and 'Are you ~?' during the warm up. (5 minutes)
2. Grammar Introduction: If the kids aren't already familiar with it, they need to be introduced to using 'Do' to ask a question using verbs other than 'to be' and the answers 'Yes, I do." and "No, I don't." (5 minutes)
3. New Words: If this is a JHS class, there are the new words on pages 28-29 to cover; in an elementary class, go over the words 'guitar', 'flute', 'piano', 'Canada', 'Australia', 'Japan', 'volleyball', 'baseball', and 'soccer'. (5 minutes)
4. Reading/Practice: Either the reading on pages 28-29, or by going over the four questions and answers they'll need in the game:
Do you play ~? Yes, I do.
Do you like ~? No, I don't.
Are you from ~? Yes, I am.
Are you ~? No, I'm not.
5. Guess Who? Game: Introduce the game by asking "Am I ?" Once the students reply with "Yes, you are," shake your head and say "I'm not . I'm ." Show them your ID card with your 'new' name. (You might want to make an extra large version for this.) Tell them what you like, what you play, and where you're from according to the ID card. Choose another ID card, and hide it from the students, and hand out the reference sheet. Have the JTE take a card too. You and the JTE ask each other questions, and the students follow on their sheets. Once you or the teacher has enough information, ask the students if they know who you or the teacher is.
6. Have the students play the game with each other, recording their wins on the back of the reference sheet with Real Name-ID card name. Once they win, they must find someone new to play. With five minutes left, collect them and see who got the most names. Yeah them! Applause! (25 minutes)
